Couples Counselling, Online Across Alberta

Every relationship gets stuck sometimes, communication breaks down, intimacy fades, or you’re just not hearing each other the way you used to. Things like recurring arguments, trust issues, major life transitions can sometimes take us out of that happy place we call home. That is what we work on, Identifying the why’s and reconnecting the communication.

Who I work with

Couples, and any number of partners in a relationship. If you come in as a couple, I may ask for a session or two apart along with time together – for any number of people involved. I’ve also worked with one partner solo when the other isn’t ready to join, though at a certain point I’ll be upfront if I’ve gotten too close to one person to keep doing couples work fairly.
If you don’t know where to start…
That’s normal, most people don’t walk in with a script. I usually just ask how your week’s gone. It’s an easy door into everything else
Prefer to come alone? I also see Individuals.

What we work toward

There’s no single goal I push everyone toward since every individual is different. Your goal might be feeling more comfortable in your body, breaking an old unhealthy pattern, deepening intimacy, or getting clearer on where your relationship or family is headed. Goals shift as you do, and we shift with them.

Sex & Intimacy in Relationships

Desire differences, fading intimacy, sexual avoidance, or performance pressure – these are some of the most common reasons couples end up here. Alongside the goals above, this can include:

  • Talking about sex together without it turning into a fight
  • Rebuilding connection and intimacy after having kids
  • Learning to initiate – and to decline – respectfully
  • Expanding intimacy beyond intercourse
  • Building a sexual relationship that works for both (or all) of you

Opening or Navigating Non-Monogamy

Support for relationships exploring or already living non-monogamy – opening a relationship, setting agreements and boundaries, working through jealousy and emotional security, and communicating across more than two partners as things shift and grow.

Rebuilding After Infidelity

Infidelity – including online, sexting, or pornography-related boundary breaks – asks a lot of everyone involved. I support couples through disclosure and the immediate aftermath, understanding what the injury is, rebuilding emotional and physical safety, deciding whether to stay together, setting new agreements, and restoring intimacy without pressure or a countdown clock.

When you and your partner see things differently

I set the ground rules for how the conversation goes, and how I show up depends on how heated or calm things get – sometimes I’m more referee than therapist. Mostly, it’s about helping each of you hear the other in a way that lands. I get to know what matters to you individually, so I can translate – if one of you is into something the other isn’t, I’ll find the comparison that makes it click.

How to know if I'm the right fit

Every relationship starts with a free consultation for usually about 15 minutes, though it often runs longer, and that’s fine. I’ll walk you through how I work and how session frequency gets decided (you decide). No therapist should take it personally if the fit isn’t right, and that goes both ways, any time.

Session details

Couples and multi-partner sessions run 90 minutes. Evening and weekend times are available, and a sliding scale is available if cost is a barrier.

FAQs

Do you work with individuals, couples and other relationship structures?

If it is a couple, I am upfront that I may ask for them to do separate sessions here and there as well as everyone together, that goes for any number of people in that relationship. I have also worked with one person in a relationship without the other partner joining but again, I must let them know that at a certain point I would not be able to do couples therapy as I would have formed too close a relationship with the one person. Individuals yes.

What if they do not know what to say?

I usually ask how their week has gone no matter what, it’s easier to transition to other things after that 😉

What kinds of goals might you work toward together?

Every person has different goals and whatever goal they want to achieve is what we work towards, goals may change or branch out and then we change or branch out appropriately. Some want to be more comfortable with their body, some may want to not repeat unhealthy choices, others may want better intimacy, some want clearer ideas for future planning in career or family, etc.

How do you handle differences between partners during couples counselling?

I set up how the conversation will go, rules for example, and depending on what the difference is and how volatile or docile they are also dictates how I will proceed. Sometimes I feel like a smack down referee but mostly it’s a give and take and it’s more about helping one voice their feelings in a way the other can understand better. Most times it’s a matter of getting to know them so I can draw references to what one partner is saying , for example is one partner loves NASCAR I would try to think of a comparison in the racing or car world that would align with what the other partner is saying to help them understand.

How can someone determine whether you are a good fit?

I offer a consultation that is free of charge, I say it usually is about 15 minutes but often I go over and that’s totally fine. I give them a brief overview of how I work, that they decide when and how often they see me, etc. I always tell people that no therapist should ever feel any type a way if you don’t feel your personalities don’t mesh or aren’t ‘feeling it’ period.  Likewise, if you are with a therapist for a while and something changes and you are feeling like maybe it’s not the right fit anymore than that is also completely acceptable.
