What is Sexual Health?
It can mean many things, and it can be misleading or misunderstood.
For me, and my practice of adult sexual health counseling, it means being able to talk about and receive support in areas such as communication and intimacy between partners, learning how to have a healthy or healthier romantic and/or intimate relationship – day to day or after betrayal or trauma. It means having support with sexual identity, gender, alternative lifestyles, kinks, fetishes and fantasies, etc. Stigmas, social ‘norms’, how we were raised – these can leave us questioning our thoughts and beliefs, what is ‘normal’ or ‘too much’ and ‘not enough’.
It can also mean that you simply want a better relationship with yourself or your partner(s). Are past betrayals or traumas interfering or keeping you from where you want to be? In order to heal, move forward, or achieve the life you want to have, a sexual, romantic or intimacy component may not be the issue or primary issue; so you may wonder how or why someone who focuses on adult sexual health could help you or be the best choice. The answer is simple, the foundational therapies, education, and principles we as therapists learn, give us the tools to help support you, our client, with a broad base of concerns. From there some, like myself, like to focus on a particular area that speaks to us on a more personal or professional level. For my practice that means that while I have a focus in Adult Sexual Health, I also do General Counseling as well.
It sounds like a lot of area to cover in itself, however I find these are often intertwined. I have separated them as individual services for more clarification; I invite you to view my services to learn more.
